The film is held together by its virtually flawless technique, mixing video footage and 2D animation all but seamlessly… Far more than its technique, it is indeed the film’s very existence that is utterly mind-blowing. Even when it nicely moves along its narrative arc, Space Jam never ceases to feel like a very intense fever dream.

…Former Chicago gay rights activist and linguistics professor Michal Brody has cogently argued… that SPACE JAM bears many unusual correspondences to the thousand-year old Popol Vuh mythology of the Quiché Maya kingdom… While the details vary (in the Popol Vuh, the heroes intend to retrieve the head of their father, Hunahpu; whereas in SPACE JAM, the villains have stolen the talent of NBA stars such as Charles Barkley and Patrick Ewing), the congruence is remarkable.
