A bland, formulaic mainstream plot dressed in indie rags that doesn't offer anything new or memorable. It's pretty much like watching 'As good as it gets' with Jack Nicholson. At least Melissa McCarthy was more watchable here than in 'Tammy'. 1.5 stars
Seen it before. One time too many.An avalanche of cliches and not a single fresh idea. It's stale, like Vince's breath. And Naomi Watts gets the price as worst Russian wannabe since Nicole Kidman's forgettable performance in Birthday Girl ("Are you a giraffe?")
'...come in she said I'll give you shelter from the storm...' Melfi's script may fall on the sentimental side but some quite good performances let the film overcome its maudlin tendencies. Murray is great here, if somewhat playing to type, as is Watts, McCarthy (surprise surprise) and newcomer Jaeden Lieberher. Schmaltz is schmaltz but hey Bill Murray is Bill Murray.
I went in thinking, this is either gonna be a 3-star movie or a 4-star movie. Unfortunately, it falls in the former category, largely due to an overly-structured, safe, mushy script. But Bill Murray is fun to watch, and his rendition of "Shelter From The Storm" over the credits was a delight.
