What are people saying?

  • Mugino's rating of the film Stranger

Among the Kazakhs, Tursunov explained, "strangers" are those who cannot be punished with prison or institutionalization, so they are punished through exile. Ilyas' isolation is both a banishment -- forced by destiny, as well as chosen -- and an embrace of the divine in the harshly beautiful Kazakh Steppe. It is also an enviable freedom, for which he is inevitably made to suffer. It brims with poetic imagery.
