Synopsis

Captain Tadamori returns to Kyoto after successfully defeating the uprising of pirates in the western sea of Japan. But because the high courtiers dislike career soldiers gaining power and influence, they ignore the will of ex-Emperor Toba.

Shin Heike Monogatari exploits the rich delicate shades of bright silk embroidered kimonos, or massed cherry blossom trees, or angry reds and blacks for scenes of conflict and dramatic action. Throughout, the colour is used to enrich the mood and tone of this famous Japanese historical tale of a time of civil war between two rival clans.

Like Gate of Hell it uses the minute in-studio recreation of Japanese twelfth-century architecture to achieve subtle lines and framings, a studied architectural approach that is contrasted to the more sweeping ‘open’ approach to outdoor crowd scenes. (The scene with hundreds of monks carrying torches crossing the forest is especially impressive.)
