Coumba and her sister Debo are the first to leave their family’s remote African village to attend school in the bustling city. But when an accident suddenly threatens their family’s survival, their father decides to sell 11-year-old Debo into an arranged marriage.
This film is not currently playing on MUBI but 30 other great films are. See what's now showing
Slow paces but touching story and an insight into life in a remote African village. Available on MUBI as 720p is great bonus as screened on a large screen projector it's a little like a 82 minute travel adventure.
I LOVE West African cinema! Unfortunately, residents of Senegal and Mali are not privileged to see this great film, or any African Cinema, as film festival attendees, Parisians, and MUBI subscribers are. There is only one cinema in Dakar, Senegal's largest city, and they don't show African films, just Bollywood or kung fu films. "Don't you see? All we have is our culture."
Quite wonderful picture from Senegal that pits traditional village customs against the will of a young woman determined to save her sister from an arranged marriage to pay the family debts. Dior Ma is quite the find as the determined girl and the naturalistic script and settings is quite universal. The calmness and tranquility are interestingly at odds with the inner turmoil of the young characters. Excellent.
Having spent a couple of years living in a village in W.Africa I found this a wonderfully honest and accurate depiction of life there. It felt very familiar and I thoroughly enjoyed it, the cultural dilemmas of the traditional meeting the modern continue.
