John Wayne as director is an interesting idea in theory but in practice? A woeful piece of cinema that is long, dull and talkative. I gave up after an hour. Life's too short sometimes. The fact that this got nominated for Best Picture over Psycho explains why I don't trust the Oscars.
Less is more. Too much patriotism, too much religion, too much (useless) talking, unnecessarily overlong. At times unintendedly comic; ridiculous. Although almost too much of everything, the movie lacks greatness. Boring.
True story? I doubt it. Actual people? Sure. Wayne's directing debut, while not terrible, leaves a little to be desired but the film captured my attention and interest for the duration of the 2.5 hours. The portrayal of the 3 characters (Bowie, Crockett, Travis) and the interaction of their personalities was good, even if not completely accurate. Many of the locations were impressive. Touch of humor as well.
