Critics reviews

The respect and attention to detail with which Dupont tells the tale of a rabbi’s stage-struck son who leaves his Galician shtetl (apparently filmed on location in Poland) for success as a star player in Vienna’s Burgtheater, reflects on his grandparents’ migration from the periphery of the Habsburg Empire to its capital.

The scenes in the shtetl (above) are done with considerable attention to authenticity and without the sort of ethnic humor that one might expect. . . . Dupont has mastered three-point lighting and analytical editing, including shot/reverse shot.

  • El Biffo's rating of the film The Ancient Law

The stunning restoration by L'Immagine Ritrovata, Bologna, bumps this one up to 5 stars for me. Never before have I seen such beautifully defined images and rich texture from a Silent Era film. I wish I could give L'Immagine Ritrovata a list of all the faded, scratched films that I would like to see restored and get the same treatment for all of them! Including 1970's B-movies and indies, like films by Andy Milligan.
