Very entertaining classic horror melodrama features another great tortured performance from Peter Lorre. Florey evokes some extraordinary gothic atmosphere with great black and white cinematography and period production design, and the original story (reportedly conceived by an uncredited Luis Bunuel) is sharply scripted by Curt Siodmak with a prevailing sense of absurdist wit. A must for classic horror fans.
The main problem with this film is most of the actors aren't that good, and then there's Peter Lorre. It's like throwing pearls to swine. These are pretty boring actors. The screen only comes alive when he's in the picture. Jack Warner hated Lorre, and this was his last picture with Warner Brothers.
