The Believers is an overlong and overwrought film that depicts its more creepy qualities of cult evil too much in the background. The ant scene is the exception, and it being so brazenly horrific that it makes one think in a film of this concept lacking consistent unease and even more unique creepy happenings, that perhaps the creators are ashamed of the more sensory stimulations of the genre they are working in.
I saw this film when it was theatrically released some 30 years ago and three scenes have stayed in my memory ever since. The electrocution scene, the arrival of the Haitian priest at the airport and the pimple on Helen Shaver’s face. Not bad for a genre movie. Recommended.
Un thriller mediocre que mueve a la risa involuntaria (esa mujer que muere electrocutada al comienzo o Jimmy Smits gritando "Culebra" mientras se sostiene la barriga) Viniendo de John Schlesinger la decepción es doble.
To clarify the IMDB synopsis - this movie's "evil" centers on Santeria, not Vodou; and surprisingly, it makes the distinction. A mildly interesting horror movie, but an abhorrent representation of Afro-Caribbean religion.
