  • EdieEmm's rating of the film The Best of Cinerama

I'm (and still lots of us are) of an age that grew up impressed by shit that wouldn't excite the average iPad-wielding toddler today, and there's a nostalgic pleasure beyond the historical in immersing oneself in that old innocence. Course, there's plenty that's not-so-innocent about the historical*, much of which is on equally bold display, so... plenty of salt (or straight up revulsion). Neat immersion concept.

  • Stefan Drees's rating of the film The Best of Cinerama

The idea of total immersion through a reconstruction of the viewer’s point of view: interesting not only because of the very beautiful and sometimes breathtaking visuals but also as a kind of sociological study regarding the (often stereotyped) characterization of national customs, architecture and music - although many commentaries (like the phrases underlined with American patriotic songs) seem unbearable today.

  • nica's rating of the film The Best of Cinerama

What I thought this was going to be: a fun, lighthearted watch What it really was: a true showcase of Eisenhower’s America, complete with an imperialist tour around the world

  • Raúl Silva Gómez's rating of the film The Best of Cinerama

  • DebraM's rating of the film The Best of Cinerama

I think the effect of this sprawling travelogue is tempered by the rampant imperialism of post-war US cinema and the blatant racism and misogyny it helped perpetrate. Still interesting though from a western cinema history viewpoint. Pretty pictures but I wouldn't want to live there.

  • Korial's rating of the film The Best of Cinerama

An essential addition to your knowledge of the history of cinema. An impressive attempt to 3D and VR! Lots of majestic aerial views. The implicit slogan - "for a few bucks, enjoy the world" - resonates with the movie. When America was the heaven of entertainment and divertissement.

  • lou.'s rating of the film The Best of Cinerama

A nice world tour of the wonders of the world in aerial perspective: visually incredible for that time, sometimes sociologically interesting, sometimes merely folklore... overall, I have to say I enjoyed it and I still wonder how it'd feel being in the theatre during the screening of it. I've got a feeling my 27" screen doesn't render enough.

  • Edwin Culp's rating of the film The Best of Cinerama

An imperialistic viewpoint, the best postwar attractions cinema (mixed with a certain ethnographic and scientific gaze), stunning views, technicolor. The music and voice overs create an almost ironic traveler's narrative. It's really worthwhile to watch how the world is viewed through these cameras in our VR-aspiring environment, while culturally building a hegemonic and propagandistic view of the world.
