What are people saying?

  • Noli Manaig's rating of the film The Big Durian

Rather than draw on documentary's inherent gravitas, this one clowns around with hammy, unfunny interlocutors. The subject may humour, but only blackly: why a man went amok in Kuala Lumpur in 1997, how it might correlate with racial & political divisions in Malaysia's melting pot. The Bakhtinian treatment, as a result, feels less like a thumbing of the nose at authority than a repellent theatricality.
