Possibly one of the most beautiful movies I've had the pleasure of experiencing. The Bird People in China confirms how Miike has so many facets to himself that he explores. He brings the characters and the earth to detail with quirks of strangeness and a sense of humor that is raw and an understanding of human culture that is beautiful.
Why doesn't somebody say the obvious thing about this film, which is that it is Miike's best? The final image is pretty easily one of the most striking final shots in film history. I've been trying to find the recording of 'annie laurie' that plays during the end credits for YEARS.
