Ratings & Reviews

  1. Howard Fritzson's rating of the film The Bishop's Wife

Why is this film a Christmas perennial? To put it bluntly, it sucks. No one comes out of this debacle looking good. The concept is idiotic. The tone is cloying. You always need a bit of acid to balance the sweet. Here there is none.

  2. Luke Corradine's rating of the film The Bishop's Wife

Despite the fact the film has aged quite badly, this title more than any other I have seen, demonstrates Grant's absolute mastery at 'ambiguity'. That man, handsome as he was, so extraordinarily charming, could 'play' with the audience like no other. He could play both fun and serious; open and reserved; switch dynamic several times in a scene, and still leave you mesmerised. How absolutely magnificent - Grant!

  3. Superfrog's rating of the film The Bishop's Wife

Pleasant, sufficiently clever to be engaging while being a perfect holiday season film, that makes you feel good while challenging social issues just enough not to be too sweet. Effective because of this.

  5. Mike Baker's rating of the film The Bishop's Wife

Nothing wrong with a bit of sentiment and especially when it's done as classily as this film - its central message, that everything's going to be all right, isn't said or felt enough.

  6. Noëlle's rating of the film The Bishop's Wife

  7. P Teddy Sawyer's rating of the film The Bishop's Wife

A favourite from childhood. Monty Woolewy's jolly down-at-heel professor was one of my favourite characters from cinema, and the purchase of the Christmas tree one of my favourite scenes. It opened up to me the possibilities for friendship in the 'Big City' which village life did not and yet it seems to describe the ideal village in the City

  8. ExperimentoFilm's rating of the film The Bishop's Wife

Impressive cast with a couple of amusing moments, but the film's materialism and conservatism mean I'll never watch it again. (5/10)

  9. SpacePirate's rating of the film The Bishop's Wife

A grand holiday film with great supporting actors of the day like James Gleason, Monty Wooley, and Gladys Cooper. Grant gives one of the defining performances of his career here. Worth seeking out during the holidays. 4.5 stars
