An 80's family movie with all the forced uplift, banal musical cues and Hallmark sentiments that era in cinema implies, yet containing dark, troubling undercurrents as well. All of the characters are soul-sick outsiders reeling from loss, searching desperately for stability or some form of transcendence. Lucy Deakins is lovely in this, wish she was in more films. A flight of fancy grounded in painful, valid emotion.
