An extremely controlled in mood and tone film that is less about music and more about professional ethics, the love for one's vocation, the drive to recognition and the resentment that leads to paralysis once it is realized that heights of nobility cannot be easily reached. Gielgud gives an assured performance and Wajda directs this without much recourse to visual frenzy, yet with an interiority rarely matched today.
