Bing Crosby does the Academy Award-bid bit in the atypical role of a self-pitying alcoholic, but it was his co-star, a deglamorized Grace Kelly, who won the Oscar for her performance in The Country Girl.

This is more the William Holden show than anything. Bing and Grace seemed to have zero chemistry to me, and the fact she won an Oscar over Garland is a travesty. Worth watching for Holden's performance as the hard nosed determined producer alone. Not much else to recommend. Was a bit of a letdown given all the acclaim. Extra star added for Holden. 3.5
