A surprisingly dark and cold debut that is miles away from the director's late mannerist comedies. It's important to notice this is the only film of his current 15 features that is not written by him, which may account for its different tone. The five sex scenes depicted here are crucial for the film's development, as they are intended to represent acts of love, manipulation, fear, regret, and ultimately, death.
Everything's already there, and already brilliant, but it's all in service of a vision that's considerably nastier and more unforgiving than what follows. Couple that quality with the score and it feels at times like Hong trying to do Oshima.
