A film-in-film story set in a provincial town in USSR. Pasha (Churikova) is an amateur actress who plays a witch at a local club, but her dream is to play Joan of Arc. In a strike of luck she is cast as Joan of Arc in a big screen film.
This film is not currently playing on MUBI but 30 other great films are. See what's now showing
I've seen too many films. This has been on the margins of my must-see list for many years but i didn't expect to be stunned, astonished and have that old strange sickness again. I'll give Churikova a lot of the credit.
The ups and downs of being in love, of being an aspiring artist. As with the best cinema, the nuances of human life are unspeakable. This is a testament to the human spirit. A welcome-home party for the actress stirred my emotions most, a high point in the film. Consolation is hard to achieve, but there's nothing like having a few friends around after you've crawled out of an enormous pile of shit; tears of life.
