As gentle in plotting as life on the farm itself, The Dismantling is a warm, gentle tale of selfless sacrifice and an intelligent look at the complexity of family relationships. The rich, sun-drenched rendering of a cold climate with a subtle performance from Gabriel Arcand elevate the potentially depressing subject matter and turn it from a story of loss to a story of enlightenment. 4 stars
The dying of the family farm in rural Quebec is the undertone of this rich drama from director Pilote that is a moving exceptional film. The 'Lear' like sacrifice a father makes for his two daughters is captured with a realistic and naturalistic eye. Gabriel Arcand gives a fantastic turn as the aged farmer well matched in smaller roles by Sophie Desmarais and Lucie Laurier as his two 'princesses'. Poignant.
