Psychiatry plays a major role in the story, but despite the doctor's best intentions, only first-person experience connects Jerome to is id. But where, in Hitchcock's world, visual erotic fixation of the sort that James Stewart had on Kim Novak, was an absolute imperative, in Tashlin's world, it's an obstacle that needs to be overcome. For Tashlin, attraction from afar is the opposite of true love.
