Fully expecting my tear ducts to be cynically manipulated, instead I found a sensitive, tender, strongly-acted depiction of two young people falling in love. The chemistry between the two leads is something casting directors dream of, and despite the devastating story, it's rarely hysterical or mawkish.
I feel like some kind of apostate for hating this movie so much when I think of how much I love so many '80s teen movies, but just...God. I wanted to take my own face off so many times watching this. Drunk douchebag Willem Dafoe is the only redeeming feature. Augustus Waters is maybe literally the worst character in fiction. Top 10, without question.
Surprisingly good (apart from some really porrly directed/scripted scenes)! The only movie that fitted into my cinema timeslot and I was honestly expecting a Nicholas Sparks kind of bullshit. Well, I imagine that MUBI's prima donnas will still think that, but the story really sucks you in and the acting is exceptionally good for such young actors. Never judge a movie by it's poster kind of situation I guess
