I don't understand what Meerapfel wants to show. She opens so many possible storylines (post-war generation, political film, love story, drama, jewish identity etc.) but is not able to handle them in a convincing way. The result is a confusing film with sometimes very creepy dialogues. And the music is German film academy schoolbook shit: If you have a sad looking person, take piano arpeggios with strings etc.
I am struggling to see the film since half of the voices are dubbed into German! Yes, the boy's parents do speak in German in the original, but not the girl's family, they are dubbed and it is so distracting!
