Synopsis

Two sisters are fighting for social change in 1960s West Germany, but their means are different. The younger, Marianne, joins the political underground, while Juliane is a journalist. When Marianne is arrested, Juliane visits her in prison. As they grow closer, a tragedy suddenly occurs.

Our take

One of Ingmar Bergman’s eleven favorite films, this is a personal portrayal of the relationship between sisters at the forefront of political struggle in severely different ways. Inspired by Baader-Meinhof’s Gudrun Ensslin and her sister Christine, the film won the Golden Lion at Venice in 1981.
