I found this to be extremely underrated. Surprisingly it has substance and the characters are not dimensional. It also has some good performances from Paul Dano, Elisha Cuthbert, Emile Hirsch and Timothy Olyphant.
Tthese lines: Eli: Matt, she's a porn star! Okay? Take her to a motel room and bang her like a beast!
Matt: Eli, I like this girl.
Eli: And you can still like her with your penis inside her. Matthew, I tell you that you're gonna regret this. What would JFK do? You know he'd tap that ass.
Eli: Goddammit Matt! I swear to God if you don't fuck her, I'll kill myself! Matt! Please! Please, Matt! Fuck her for me! For me
I wasn't expecting The Girl Next Door to be that great, perhaps due to the sexualized DVD cover. I was proven wrong when I was thrust into a passionate story about a young man that is more demure than party animal and takes things very seriously. The acting was very good from a young Emile Hirsch, and the film deserves praise for its timely perspective on pornography vs. real life and the blurred line between them.
Horrible movie. And by horrible, I don't mean the film's content, but the film itself. Terrible acting, mediocre editing, even worse period setting. Not fun for anyone, not even the gore scavengers. Do yourself a favor and skip this film. Watch An American Crime instead if you want another (better) take on the subject.
