Williams' play is still searching for the quintessential adaptation of this fraught domestic drama. This is possibly the closest anyone (maybe K. Hepburn in 1973) has come so far. Profound characterisation: 'the velvet glove and the iron fist' personified. The metaphor of 'the glass menagerie' speaks of the precious nature and social graces of a smorgasbord of characters.
Probably the second best version of Tennessee Williams' poetic play (the best being the one with Audrey Hepburn from 1973).
I'm a fan of Williams' plays, and Newman directs this one perfectly. Great cast. One of my favorites.
This movie seriously needs more attention. It's a PERFECT adaptation of play, PERFECT. I always preferred glass menagerie to streetcar. And Tom is way sexier than Stanley Kowalski will ever be.
