The Good Earth is at times a vividly realized melodrama of famine and revolution in pre–World War II China, and Rainer is expressive in her quiet fortitude—indeed it is often a silent performance. Yet it’s difficult to get past her basic pantomime today; partly because she is so reserved, her makeup often becomes the main attraction, from her taped-back eyes to her mud-caked skin to the aging effects in the film’s second half.

The movie is a dazzling piece of old-style filmmaking, the definition of the sort of epic we shall not see again, and at times it is very moving, due in large part to Rainer’s performance.
