Novack traces Talley’s life from his childhood in the Jim Crow south to the halcyon days of high fashion in pre-millennial Paris and New York to the presidential election of 2016, which serves as an awkward framing device for Talley to ruminate on the casual racism he’s endured. At 68, he’s as erudite and vivacious as ever; Novack follows his lead, but at a polite distance.
