Though punctuated by moments of taut conflict, the restraint of von Horn’s direction creates a lasting dramatic tension that is epitomised by 21- year-old pop star-turned-actor Ulrik Munther (think Sweden’s answer to Ed Sheeran), who deserves huge credit for his understated central turn. This is a film that poses both difficult and vital questions about how compassion and tolerance are exercised on a societal level, without ever asking us to pass moral judgement on any of its characters.

Sure, von Horn has been studying his Haneke, but he’s a good learner, and his film absolutely puts us where he wants us… Still, while its assured craft can hardly fail to impress, in retrospect its expressive humanity is achieved by keeping the reality of the victim’s suffering largely out of the frame. The result is potent, certainly, but naggingly troubling in the longer term.

This feeling of isolationist angst is taken to pitiless extremes in The Here After, Magnus von Horn’s intelligently crafted and incrementally intense drama whose flame burns cold.
