Very subdued by today´s standards. The film lacks temper and for the most part tension, too. The setting is grand, the special effects team did a great job. In tone, tempo and scope it resembles Wise´s Star Trek movie (also the color scheme is very similar)! Quite fittingly, when the disaster finally strikes, the rising action is spoiled by inappropriate freeze frames. Strange.
