I didn't know much except a general knowledge about the history of the IRA but that didn't prevent me from understanding the film which is character based not historical. Very impressive perfomances considering so much occurs in the backseat of a car which serves as their theatre!
McGuinness and Paisley's rapprochement and friendship is an interesting story but it's rarely done justice here in what is effectively a TV movie with few flourishes. Bateman's script fills in the gaps for the uninitiated but it's very clumsy in parts. And while Meaney and Spall's performances can't be faulted, it is a bit weird to see the two protagonists played by non-Ulstermen.
