A fugitive wanted for murder is being pursued by a lawmanm out for revenge. The two meet up and and get involved with a Midwestern family, help them move their herd, and fall in love with the daughters, before they make time for a confrontation.

My dislike for Kirk Douglas keeps me from liking this more. It's a fairly enjoyable and somewhat lyrical movie about civilization's masculinity crisis, with all the usual Virtues like honor and duty unreflectively intertwined with male pride.
Aldrich's lean directorial style keeps the melodrama grounded. A few great moments and the ending is great as well. Not Robert Aldrich's best or most interesting film but nonetheless highly enjoyable...
