The story, set in Kansas in the 1920s, covers a year in the life of a black teenager, and documents the events which force him into sudden manhood. The family relationships and enmities, fears, frustrations and ambitions of small-town America are explored with a strong statement about human values.

Parks does it all here (script, music, director) and pulls off a memorable debut film. This movie is set in the 20s but reminds me of my hometown a bit, where unfortunately racism is still alive and well.
