What are people saying?

  • John Baldwin's rating of the film The Life of Matsu the Untamed

This is the best film by Inagaki I've seen, a classic of wartime Japanese cinema. Tsumasaburô Bandô, a huge star in Japan before and during the war, but totally unknown in the West, is wonderful as the rough-hewn but good-hearted Matsu, and Keiko Sonoi, who would later die tragically from atomic bomb radiation, equals him as the upper-class woman Matsu secretly loves. Perfect blend of sentimental humor and pathos.
