The Marriage Circle

Directed by Ernst Lubitsch
United States, 1924
Comedy, Silent, Romance
      Silent
      Portuguese

Synopsis

Dr. Franz Braun is happily married to Charlotte, Professor Josef Stock is unhappily married to Mizzi Stock – who decides to chase Dr. Braun while Braun’s partner is hoping for an affair with Charlotte – and then things really get complicated.

Our take

Ernst Lubitsch is most famous today for his sound comedies, but his wit was as visual as it was verbal, and he was one of the silent era’s hottest directors. This comedy, his first after being scooped up by Warner Bros., is a highlight, a turning point, and a masterclass of refined naughtiness.
