Synopsis

Enzo returns to Genoa after a lengthy absence. He crosses the city in search of places he remembers from before but they have been changed by passing time. He finds Mary waiting for him at their small house in the ghetto. His life-long companion, she has been waiting for Enzo to return from prison.

Marcello’s subjects, places, and elicited memories bare the temporal distances—decades, centuries—standing between them. This is nowhere more apparent than in Marcello’s whatzit essay film, The Mouth of the Wolf, which, if no longer his best film, still stands as his most aesthetically and structurally complex work.

This fantasy of deferred bliss may recall sentimental fare like Up, but The Mouth of the Wolf is Jean Genet meets Pedro Costa. She’s a recovering heroin addict transsexual rocking a non-passable female voice and a no-nonsense attitude. He’s an irresistible hyper-masculine brute a la Our Lady of the Flowers. It’s meant to be.
