I'm giving these Mummy films 3 stars but it's actually more like 2.5. They're not great but I still kind of love them as part of the Universal Monsters cannon. Tom Tyler's Mummy is pretty scary with his blacked out eyes and glistening like a revived bog Mummy rather than a dry, dusty one from the sands of Egypt.
2 1/2 out of 5 stars. The Mummy's Hand doesn't touch the original, but is just as entertaining as the rest of the second-string Universal monster movies. The cast does its job and the characters are colorful enough to make up for the movie's other shortcomings. In the plus column, the mummy itself was creepy as hell, especially the close-ups when he invaded the Solvani's tent. Ho hum horror otherwise.
8 years after the original Universal re-booted 'The Mummy' with this inferior but fun first entry of a new four film series. Plotting and casting are atypical of the time period but the Mummy makeup effects are pretty stellar. The blackened eyes of the creature are actually pretty horrifying. No classic but solid Universal monster feature.
