=== One of the best teen movies. Funny, touching and above all natural, without clichés. The music score is extra & the kids are all great! A success !
There is always something in films about adolescence that gets on my nerves. Probably because they always force too much the nerds, the popular/jerks, the outcasts, the new kid.. This group of true friends & kids really being kids made me so happy. Loved the characters, the cast, the moment when Benoit only hears "Johanna" in math class (who hasn't?), Constantin, Aglaée.. Serious congrats to the casting director!
Charming. Childish. Basic. The New Kid is, simply, nothing new. A joyful look at adolescents, popularity, and friendship that may not be the most refreshing of tales, but still has enough general charm and charisma to keep a smile on your face and a warmth in your chest. It's a cup of hot cocoa on a cold winter's eve, the warmth of sleeping in a single ray of sunshine. Familiar, yes, but not unpleasant.
What incredible casting, and great performances. The storyline is nothing extraordinary, but the fantastic performances of the kids are really what make this film a pleasure to watch. It's very fun to watch these kids performing the brazen insolence of being kids; in a few of the scenes you suspect that perhaps they're even half-smiling, fully aware that the audience is too.
This film is not an original film. But it was not meant to be one. This film is a small, tiny, but intensely warm film about a boy who is new at school and tries to find his way finding new friends. It is an ode to schoollife and the film is filled with nostalgia and recognizable events.
This is a lovely movie about friendship. How to get into one, about problems, advantages, breaks and new beginnings. Le Nouveau could also be seen as a metaphor. We watch teens in a classroom. But are we different? How do we approach towards new ones (e. g. refugees)? The kids are acting fantastically, by the way.
It is delight to see how coming-of-age stories can be so refreshing and funny to watch, and this is a faithful portrayal of adolescence and all that comes with it, made in a simple, sensitive way and with some deliciously spontaneous performances by its young cast. http://www.filmotrope.com
