Finally found and watched this apparently unknown gem. Despite some occasionally poor-ish acting and absolutely no day/night continuity, this film is a weird, creepy and incredibly clever serial killer on the loose film. There's more than just a nod to Poe's The Raven here. Sydow is great, the plot is great, the asylum escape is superb. This film is a must see. 4/5.
There's actually a lot that's good here - the score is weird and awesome, and the very clinical way we watch Salem leave the asylum is exciting. I can't lie, as stupid as the plot is, and it is incredibly stupid, this has some really fun moments. However, that ending is just the fucking worst, it really is, and neither Per Oscarsson or Liv Ullmann should ever speak English in a dramatic role. Ever.
This was awesome. Great plot, great acting with Sydow giving one of his best English language performances, and cool escape scene. Some apparently hated the ending but I found it hilarious and a good counterpoint to the heaviness of much of the film. Worth seeking out, but its tough to find. 4 stars
