Synopsis

Pub landlord TJ Ballantyne, living in a previously thriving mining community in County Durham, struggles to hold onto his pub and keep it as the one remaining public space where people can meet in the town.

Our take

Having taken on the inadequacies of the job center and the next-day-delivery economy, Ken Loach and Paul Laverty end their trilogy about austerity in that old bastion of community: the pub. Brimming with anger at society left to rot, this heartfelt drama raises a glass to cross-cultural solidarity.
