THE OPEN HOUSE:
Really poor camerawork and lighting render jump scares ineffective. Anticipation awkwardly builds by predictable means. Unpredictable element of surprise thrown into film last minute. End Credits.
I like Dylan Minnette.
50/100 - Okay.
spoilers ahead, if you care. god, that was so generic and pointless. i feel like the only clue to whatever the fuck was going on is the offhand "i'd kill for that kinda privacy". otherwise i have no idea why any of that happened, which is a shame because technically it's not really bad, but the plot is hilariously weak which makes all the 'tension' fake and useless
Spoiler alert for the spoiler-sensitive: I must admit that, at a certain point, I was rooting for Dylan's character to get out of that situation, but I guess that after seeing his father die and accidentally killing his mother, he was probably better off dead anyway. How can anyone live with that? And yes, that's all that's stuck with me after watching this movie. Is it about private property?
An OK time waster with a slow burn build up and a pretty unintelligible ending. The actors deserved better than this. It feels that the filmmakers have watched The Strangers too many times and tried to do something similar with the slow build up and the pointlessness of the violence. In my opinion that is probably the worst kind of inspiration...
Honestly, this movie was about to get a 4-star rating, but when the last 15 minutes ended, followed by the credits, I have to say that a mostly tense, suspenseful film was left completely dangling. Not much lends to what was even happening to this young man and his mother, and no clues are even given. Initially I thought the black guy was suspicious, but even he ends up with a slit throat. See it once if at all.
