Seems like a rather harsh fate for putting on some makeup! Griffith's Dickensian melodramas rarely do much for me (save the vampish makeup!) but Blanche Sweet elevates the emotionally manipulative material by giving a skilled emotionally earnest performance. The fort-da restaging of the bridge meet cute is admittedly wrenching in its own stagy way. Griffith's politics are anathema to me, but his craft hits home here.
