[IMAX 3D]"You're one beautiful motherfucker" hi5s "Reverse psychology? Can do that too: don't go fuck yourself!"|'d have more Queer+Women characters, a non-white Mensa girl & Bechdel'd it up a notch or 2. But hey I'll raise high a Moët to a lead woman that's single (and fine with it), independent, a professional, able to defend herself, has agency+does not fall into the helpless/motherly trope. Sterling's, Trevante's▽
Generic, slammed wall-to-wall with bad jokes, bad CGI, and a slapstick tone that would make the original sweat-and-blood Predator entries weep. The best moment was in the opening three minutes when dripping blood revealed the transparent Predator - all downhill from there.
After skipping it in theaters and rolling my eyes through the first ten minutes, perhaps the best thing I can say about Shane Black's "Predator" is...I didn't hate it. When you consider each "Predator" sequel has felt like an increasingly inferior copy of the original, it was a modest pleasure to watch a freewheeling and anarchic entry in the series (even if it sometimes feels like an inferior copy of "Predator 2"!).
The Predator is a fun enough movie but one gets the vibe that its production was a disordered one. Written & directed by Shane Black, the film has his snarky personal touch but the proceedings never come together due to gaps in logic, a too-quick pace, & a lack of character development. Strange that a filmmaker renowned for his screenwriting gifts let such notable narrative slip-ups seep into his work. [cont.]
This is a solid action film that delivers on all fronts. A far more fun franchise then the Alien series and this film keeps in that tradition offering non stop action and laughs and a little heart that makes this film somewhat human. And who would have guessed that the soldier making all those jokes about his overweight girlfriend in the first Predator would go on to direct this little gem of the franchise
I loved pretty much everything about Shane Black's approach (except maybe recycling the original score) especially the nods toward alien evolution and human as animals. Sure, it is all over the place (which is a blessing and a curse) but anything is better than ALIEN VS PREDATOR!
Can't see all the hate towards this. Minor few plot holes asides and weak leading star (Feel sorry for Boyd Hollbrook. It's time to admit that he didn't have that 'it' factor), this film served everything that it promised to offers: Splattered blood everywhere, Black's trademark dark humor, and even an ensemble casts in which everyone are having fun (Trevante Rhodes, Thomas Jane, and Keegan-Michael Key in particular)
