Sadistic and funny, ironic and tragic, The President is Makmalbaf's most watchable film in a decade. The Arab spring meets the implosion of Eastern Europe with a dash of Saddam. Heck, it could even be read as a Christian parable of sin and redemption. Bravo.
"The President" has many strong moments and some good insights into power and its corruptive nature but as a whole the movie is perhaps a bit simplistic and somehow out of tune. The dictator is an interesting character but he remains somewhat distant because he is turned into a simple fugitive too quickly. Nevertheless a film with enough material to make your moral compass spin around.
a brilliant film, part satire, part fugitive thriller. never knew makhmalbaf could make a film quite like this. theres a real gusto to it that you dont get from his earlier films (which i also loved, but this is just full of raw power and passion, which i didnt expect).
