Now here's a gem about a criminal released from prison trying to make a fresh start in the countryside. Very popular in the Soviet Union, it has a good heart, moments of wit, and an appealing feel for nature, character and visual details. The leads were played (superbly) by the director and his wife.
Pasolini meets Dostoevsky. One of those films that make you wonder how it was possible, under the circumstances. The indictment of the system couldn't be more blunt, and the empathy for the outcast more messianic.
