I was no fan of the book. The book, however, was deliberately polarising and always very vague and ambiguous. It did have some haunting scenes, particularly the ending. All this is gone in the film. Nair plays it safe and is never even approaches the level of risk and daring needed to adapt the novel. The ending is particularly unsatisfying simply because it is so satisfying. Who's the real bad guy? Nobody...
