Swinging hard for the visionary and missing, The Revenant combines Andrei Rublev with Apocalypse Now and Saving Private Ryan, unfurling winter panoramas in natural light and adding CGI animals… [It’s] Klondike Kat crossed with a Matthew Barney film, dominated by Tom Hardy’s distracting-entertaining Appalachian accent. One thing is certain: Iñárittu has finally solved the problem of how to film a realistic bear fight. The next cinematic problem he should tackle is screenwriting.

It’s so ridiculously macho that parts of it are hilarious, in the way that certain R-rated 1980’s action films starring Arnold Schwarzenegger Sylvester Stallone are hilarious. It is, rather paradoxically, both austere and extravagant, embracing a highly concentrated, at times minimalist visual aesthetic while piling on the machismo.

…This is arguably The Revenant’s greatest achievement: turning a derogatory term into an existential condition yielding a new visual field. Complementing and qualifying the film’s spectacular vistas is a mode of seeing far more subdued: spare, deliberately unemotional, almost impersonal — the observational style of a bereaved eye.

  • chanandre's rating of the film The Revenant

Is there a Iñárritu fatigue syndrome? Getting super sick now. If the film is about White Capitalistic culture destroying everything it touches why is the lead played by a blue-eyed privileged white son of Hollywood pittied for being Oscar's all-time biggest loser? What about Jamie Foxx?Oscar-worthy performances: Ali,Miami Vice, Collateral, Any Given Sunday, Django!Lead oughta be a Native American W O M A N like Powaqa

  • francisca bacon's rating of the film The Revenant

nu l-am văzut, dar analiza stil times new român a lu CTP, pe care de obicei nu-l bag în seamă că-i măinstrim, e bijuterie hahaha http://www.digi24.ro/Stiri/Digi24/Special/De+Oscar/OSCAR+2016+THE+REVENANT+CRITICAT+DE+CTP?ref=yfp .made my day. de azi dorm cu geamu deschis și în palton. iar la spital încep să rup cu dinții din cel ce-mi pică sub mână lmfao. tru violence is da nu buzzword să moară ploșnițele din străjac!

  • ASHES IN THE HOURGLASS's rating of the film The Revenant

The irony behind the film's technical prowess is that Inarritu is arguably the least graceful director alive and yes that includes Michael Bay. And how did Dicaprio go from decent to whatever the fuck this shit is? This isn't a performance, it's a masturbation session put on film. All this for a piss-yellow coloured piece of pebble.

  • Skinnedteen's rating of the film The Revenant

The survival tactics are interesting, and almost too ridiculous but because it is disclosed as "based on a true story", it saves itself from discreditation. Although, if you're looking for an artsy film to criticize, there's not much you can get from this one. Quite entertaining though!

  • Huey McEvoy's rating of the film The Revenant

Despite the focus on DiCaprio's performance, this is really an ensemble piece, and it falls to Wall Poulter to really carry the story and give us space to breathe. Emmanuel Lubezki's roaming, fish-eyed steadicam beautifully soaks up all that magic hour light, and blended with Sakamoto/Noto's perfect score creates an oddly claustrophobic widescreen atmosphere. A triumph of vision and painstaking effort.

  • Emily O's rating of the film The Revenant

like...when leo holds up the branch like a rifle is the most interesting moment of the film because it marks the futility of inarritu's attempt to "shoot" with meaning. a thoughtless movie :( (in that i don't think it cared about anyone)

  • Matthew Martens's rating of the film The Revenant

O, gorgeous brutal careless meat-grinder of elemental eternity, what a mockery you make of every story, not least your own. Not novel, and not even necessarily the case (what do I know), that's the kind of fatalism Iñárritu brings to vivid death-in-life in this grievous, grandiose vision of permanent, immanent war. Arguably puerile as philosophy and negligible as narrative, but the damned thing knocked me out.

  • Ethan's rating of the film The Revenant

Inarritu is one of the greatest directing talents going right now. Ever since his masterpiece Amores Perros, Inarritu has continued to push new heights which is completely true of this incredible epic. DiCaprio as well continues to strive for greatness as he pushes new heights with his acting. It is nice to see these two greats get honored by the Academy for their excellent work.
