  2. VincentVendetta's rating of the film The Stranger

If for some people, the start of modern cinema is Citizen Kane, others (myself included) would instead choose Italien neorealism, this urgent reconsideration of the art form after the horrors of war. Welles would probably feel the same way; when the Allies opened the doors to the concentration camps with their movie camera, when such images were projected inside small American towns, the greatest feel insignificant.

  3. Graceful Photon's rating of the film The Stranger

Surreal, melodramatic, and never boring, The Stranger offers a thrilling slow-paced psychological procedural for the post-WWII era. No lack of atmosphere (or shadows) to dilute the good vs. evil message, the picture is worth each of its 94 minutes.

  4. David Sindmark Hörnfeldt's rating of the film The Stranger

I admire Welles as an image-maker and entertainer but I usually, from what I've seen, find his psychology lacking. The direction here is wonderful, of course, but the writing, I guess, is lacklustre.

  5. Stefan Drees's rating of the film The Stranger

The storyline isn't always convincing, but the cinematography has its moments, especially the work with shadows. Also great is the more and more symbolic use of the clock and of course Welles' acting.

  8. Filipe F. Coutinho's rating of the film The Stranger

Surprisingly just O.K. Orson Welles is compelling, but most characters wear thin pretty fast. Still, exquisite visuals and superb directing help elevate The Stranger's reputation.

  10. FISCHER's rating of the film The Stranger

  11. Edna Sweetlove's rating of the film The Stranger

Not bad. Edward G. Robinson has to be the ugliest actor in film history. I loved the bit where Welles gets a spike in his gut on the top of the church. Oh dear, I just spoiled the end for anyone who's not seen it. But who cares?

    Standard fare with great performances.

  15. Ethan's rating of the film The Stranger

Even though this film was controlled mostly by the studio we still see some of that Welles brilliance shine through in not only his direction but his performance as the Nazi in hiding as well. This is good as far as noir thrillers go.

  16. Art House Junkie's rating of the film The Stranger

A fine film from the film noir age. A great tense thriller that doesn't let go till the very end.

  17. Hugo C.'s rating of the film The Stranger

  18. msmichel's rating of the film The Stranger

Victor Trivas' Oscar nominated story dates pretty well in this tale of Nazi hunting in small town America that was one of the first mainstream films to make reference to the holocaust. Welles, a director for hire here, makes a less showy film that highlights his qualifications as an actor more than a director. Less successful are the turns by Young and Robinson (the range of cardboard) that take away from the film.

  19. SpacePirate's rating of the film The Stranger

A rather tame Welles production. You would think with a story about Nazis that it would be a little more wild, but this is pretty by the numbers for a filmmaker of his caliber. Paycheck movie for Welles? It seems so. Worth a look however as mediocre Welles is better than most. 3.5 stars

  20. david wooderson's rating of the film The Stranger

I like how he killed a guy then threw some leaves on top of him like that was a sufficient way to hide a body.

  22. cinegeek.de's rating of the film The Stranger
