Set in Hida Province in 1564. A peasant, Kyonosuke, is accepted as a samurai and becomes the third “shadow” for Lord Yasutaka. Along with shadows one and two he is expected to take the master’s place on various occasions.

The version I've seen this morning at Telluride, cobbled together from different sources, was probably the only chance in my life to see it projected. What an incredible film by this little known Japanese director, Umetsugu Inoue. Thank you to Alexander Payne for choosing this film for the festival.
