Much more a heart-wrenching study on the place of women in the 1950s, than the psychological study it's claimed to be (and oddly, is known as still). A stellar performance by Joanne Woodward. Some classic cinemascope camera work. "You know what you need? You need a darn good whippin' that's what you need. Knock some of that nuttiness out of you."
A career defining performance by Woodward, easily her best work. The film itself is just so-so, as Hollywood hadn't really learned how to address mental illness without being heavy handed. Snake Pit from the 40's is an exception. Extra star added for Woodward's performance, but the cookie cutter direction by Johnson detracts a lot from the proceedings. Ultimately, worth a look. 4 stars
