Synopsis

Night after night she would lock herself in her room and surround herself with crucifixes to ward off the vampires and with mirrors so that she could recognize a vampire by the lack of a reflection.

Atmospheric, funny, romantic and great fun, El Vampiro did for Mexico what The Horror of Dracula did for the UK. Mexico went vampire crazy over the next decade and change, each new foray into the fanged and hoary indebted to Salazar’s vampire hunting.

For me the addition of intensely funereal hispanic catholic regalia to the usual vampire iconography is a plus, especially when the female vampire first manifests out of nothing in the ornate hacienda rooms in an all-black rig that bespeaks a kind of insatiable piety. What fun.
